Dussehra and Diwali are round the corner and fasting is followed by various individuals all over India. People follow different fasting rules depending upon their rituals and beliefs. Besides the rules and regulations of fasting, see to that you keep your body hydrated, consume food which is healthy and can be easily digested. 

Rajgira flour or also known as amaranth flour is one of the best superfood ideal for fasting. It is a powerhouse of nutrients, Vitamin C, E, phosphorus, magnesium and antioxidants etc. Rajgira flour is rich in fibre and helps to bind excess cholesterol from the body.  It is also rich in iron content, thus helps in preventing anemia. It is also light to the stomach and can be easily digested. 

Here are a few delicious recipes made with Rajgira flour, which is a perfect fasting super-food. 

1. Rajgira Poori

Rajgira Puri

Rajgira pooris are easy to make and tastes yummy just like your classic wheat flour pooris. Add Rajgira poori in your fasting list this Dussehra. 


  1. Rajgira flour – 2 cups 
  2. Potato – 1 large 
  3. Salt / rock salt – as per requirement 
  4. Water – as per requirement 
  5. Desi ghee – to fry


  1. Take a cooker and boil the potato. Once it cools down, peel off the potato and mash it well.  
  2. Take a mixing bowl and add rajgira atta, salt, mashed potatoes and mix them well. 
  3. Add about 1 tsp of water and knead the mixture well. See to that you do not pour more water at once. 
  4. Now keep the dough aside. 
  5. Now, dust some rajgira flour on the surface and some small sized pooris. 
  6. Take a frying pan and pour desi ghee into it and let it become hot. 
  7.  Put in the pooris into the pan and slide them carefully in the hot ghee. 
  8. You can serve rajgira pooris with some yummy paneer masala, mixed vegetable sabzi /palya or aloo gobi sabzi/palya.  

Tips to follow 

  • You can also use sweet potato for Rajgira poori. 
  • You can also use banana for Rajgira poori instead of potatoes. 
  • The poori should not be too thick or too thin. 
  • Add very little water to the dough. 
  • If the ghee is not too hot, it will absorb more ghee and will not puff well as well.

2. Rajgira Paratha

Rajgira parathas are easy to make and healthy fasting breakfast options. Than the usual aloo paratha, methi paratha or carrot paratha, try out the Rajgira paratha which is loaded with lots of nutrients. 


  1. Rajgira flour – ¾ cup 
  2. Potatoes – 1 large  
  3. Cumin powder – ½ tsp
  4. Chopped Green chilies – 1- 1.5 tsp
  5. Salt – as per requirement 
  6. Desi ghee 


  1. Take a cooker and boil the potatoes. When it’s slightly hot, peel off the potato and mash it well.  
  2. Take a mixing bowl and add cumin powder, chillies, salt, mashed potatoes and mix them well. You can also add coriander leaves. 
  3. Add rajgira flour to the mixture. 
  4. Now, pour about 1-1.5 tsp of water and knead the mixture well. 
  5. Now, dust some rajgira flour on the surface and make medium sized parathas. 
  6. Take a pan or tawa and place the parathas to fry. 
  7. Apply some desi ghee over both sides of paratha so that it gives a bold aroma to the paratha and also enhances the taste of it. 
  8. Once the paratha is well fried, transfer it onto the plate. 
  9. Your rajgira parathas are ready to be served with curd, or any vegetable sabzi/ palya. 

Tips to follow

  • Add very little water to the flour. 

3. Rajgira Dosa

Rajgira Dosa

Dosa is one among those comfort foods all over India. Though there was a time when dosa was limited to south Indian states, but now even people outside India prefer dosa. Rajgira dosa also tastes yummy and can be easily digested. 


  1. Rajgira flour – 1 cup
  2. Rava/ Suji – ½ cup 
  3. Curd – ½ cup 
  4. Grated carrots – ½ cup 
  5. Chopped onions – 1 large 
  6. Green chillies – 1- 1.5 tsp
  7. Coriander leaves 
  8. Salt – as per requirement 
  9. Desi ghee 


  1. Take rajgira flour and rawa in a mixing bowl and mix them. 
  2. Add curd, salt and water as per requirement. See to that you do not make the batter too runny. Let the batter be not too thick. 
  3. Add carrots, onions, green chillies and coriander leaves to the batter. 
  4. Give it a good mix and keep it aside for 15 minutes. 
  5. Take a pan, set it under medium flame and spread some desi ghee all over the pan. 
  6. Pour 2 ladle of batter and spread the batter evenly. 
  7. Add ½ tsp of desi ghee on one side and let it roast, then flip the dosa and let it roast well. 
  8. Once the dosa turns golden brown, transfer the dosa on a plate. 
  9. Your Rajgira dosa is ready to be served with coconut chutney or dal.

Instead of wheat flour or maida, you can use rajgira flour for some amazing pooris, parathas or dosas. Just see to that, if you are a diabetic you need to limit the consumption of rajgira flour in your fasting food list. 

4. Rajgira Halwa


  • 1 cup rajgira atta (amaranth flour)
  • 1 + 1/2 cup milk
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup ghee
  • 1 tsp cardamom powder
  • 2-3 tbsp chopped almonds and pistachios


  • Mix sugar along with milk and cook till the sugar dissolves. Set aside. Into a pan, heat ghee and add some rajgira atta. Try to roast the atta on low flame, mixing consistently to gain a golden brown color. Make sure to carefully stir to prevent burning.
  • Slowly pour in the milk and sugar mixture, mixing consistently to avoid lumps. Add some cardamom powder and continue cooking on low flame till the milk dries up, and ghee initiates to ooze out from the sides.
  • Pour the halwa into a serving plate and garnish with chopped almonds and pistachios.

Rajgira Sheera


  • 1 bowl Rajgira flour
  • 1/2 cup jaggery
  • 1/2 cup ghee
  • 1.5 bowls water
  • 2-3 spoons dry fruits

Cooking Instructions:

  • Step 1: Measure the quantity of the Rajgira flour and dissolve it in water.
  • Step 2: Heat some ghee in a pan and add the flour, cooking it over low heat. As it begins to Cook, add some water, cover the lid, and allow it to rise.
  • Step 3: Sprinkle some dry fruits during unloading the mixture.
  • Step 4: Pour the mixture into a bowl, serve it with additional dry fruits, and enjoy.
